Télé Liban represents the first Lebanese public television network which is entirely owned by the state itself, the Lebanese government. It was founded in 1959 by General Sleiman Nawfal – strictly speaking with the aid of the France republic. Télé Liban as a public broadcast television station in Lebanon basically broadcasts completely terrestrially throughout whole Lebanon. Furthermore it can be mentioned that Télé Liban represents one of the Lebanese members of the so-called European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
At the beginning we were counting about 23 founding broadcasting organizations that were members of the European Broadcasting Union. The government operated radio station Radio Liban was one of these founding broadcasting organizations of the European Broadcasting Union. In spite of all Radio Liban decided to cease the membership in 2002. Today Radio Liban works and operates as an important part of Radio France International.
As already mentioned Télé Liban was founded in 1959 and started to work as a Francophone and Arabic broadcaster on May 28, 1959. When it was founded, Télé Liban represented the first television station in the Middle East. Its main work and general function consists in providing and broadcasting news in French as well as in Arabic.
One question which certainly arises within this context is why Télé Liban operates as both a Francophone and Arabic broadcaster. Fact is that Lebanon possesses a close relationship with France from that time on when it was placed under French administration after the end of World War I. Consequently, there is a huge number of people who do speak French.
Concluding it can be said that Télé Liban actually represents the very first television station in Lebanon – strictly speaking in the whole Arab world. Its broadcasting centre is placed in Beirut. “Live with JumpTV” is a channel of Télé Liban which provides Lebanese news as well as current affair programs.
